‘Liverpool was made for me and I was made for Liverpool’ – Bill Shankly
My first official Liverpool game was vs Manchester United in the 2001 FA Charity Shield that ended in a 2-1 victory for Liverpool, courtesy of goals from McAllister and Owen. The game also featured debuts for Riise and Van Nistelrooy. However, this game took place at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, which was hosting this showpiece event due to old Wembley having been knocked down.
My first Liverpool game at Anfield didn’t actually occur until March of the following year, an end of season encounter against Charlton back in the days when Curbishley was their managers and they were a decent mid-table team.
Although Steven Gerrard wasn’t on the pitch that day, Liverpool put out a team featuring many players that would work their way into LFC history, including Dudek (how did he pull off that save in ’05?), Hyypia, Carragher (at RB?!), Hamann, Smicer, Berger, Owen (not quite for the right reasons) & Heskey. As a young boy, I was overwhelmed.
My mum even bought me a disposable camera specifically for the match to allow me to commemorate the occasion. The only downside was, whilst standing on my seat, I fell down and got my leg caught (I was 9 and it hurt okay?). Plus I took my Pokemon Blue game cartridge with me and lost it on the way home. Serves me right, eh?
Still, thanks to goals from Smicer and Owen, LFC won 2-0. Happy Callum!
